The Chinese Communist Party at 100
VIEW EVENT DETAILSThis July, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) celebrates its 100-year anniversary. The party has indeed come a long way since its inaugural meeting on 23 July 1921 in Shanghai – today it boasts more than 95 million members, or 6.5 per cent of China’s current population.
In this public webcast, Asia Society Australia Scholar in Residence Dr Bates Gill, Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne; Dr Pradeep Taneja, Assistant Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University Ning Leng; and North Asia Correspondent at the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Eryk Bagshaw explore what the milestone means in China and unpack how the party has evolved over the last century. The panel will discuss the party’s impact on modern Chinese society and how the party interacts with business in China and abroad.
Our speakers will look at recent changes in the party under the stewardship of General Secretary Xi Jinping and how they affect Chinese daily life. They will evaluate practical aspects of party membership and how the party’s demographics have changed over the last 100 years.
