HARBOR SPRINGS — If you’re looking to spice up your winter, head to the Harbor Springs Area Chili Cook-Off, planned for 12-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 at Boyne Highlands Resort.

In recent years, the annual Harbor Springs chili event has shifted its location from downtown Harbor Springs to Boyne Highlands Resort, adding a few new attractions for participants to engage in.

“Last year this event was held indoors so we are doing something different by moving it on-hill so event goers can also enjoy the racing culture of the HEAD Downhill race,” said Erin Ernst, director of communications at Boyne Resorts.

The cook-off will take place at the base of the “Challenger” ski run. During the chili event, participating racers will be making their way down the slope. There are 13 total age groups in the race, and more than 200 participants expected.

As of press time, the chili cook-off contest had 15 total entries, nine from professional chefs and 6 novice. The resort is still currently accepting entries.

“In addition to local participants, this year’s Chili Cook Off has also become a friendly competition amongst ski areas in northern Michigan with Boyne Mountain, Crystal Mountain, Nub’s Nob, and Otsego Club participating with their best chili recipes. Lite 96 is broadcasting live from the event and also participating with a chili entry,” Ernst said.

If sampling chili in the cold just isn’t your thing, the food and the competition can be enjoyed from inside the hot cocoa lounge.

“The hot cocoa lounge will feature a (16-foot-by-9-foot) video wall outside of Zoo Bar broadcasting the Hot Cocoa Hustle Relay race on Saturday, and the HEAD Downhill race on Sunday, and of course featuring complimentary hot cocoa,” Ernst said. “We will also have special TVs inside the Zoo Bar displaying the race action.”

Following the tradition of years past, Boyne Highlands is working in conjunction with the Manna Food Project. Everyone attending the event is encouraged to bring a nonperishable item to donate at the door to help local families. Donations of food, cleaning supplies, paper products and toiletries will all be accepted.

In addition, $5 from every $12 ticket will be donated to the Manna Food Project. Admission is paid at the door. Registration is still open for the HEAD Downhill ski race. Sign up at www.boynehighlands.com.
