My Bible: reasons to believe in the power of the Bible
‘Over the last few years, it feels like there’s been a lot of upheaval globally, but I’ve also changed my job and my city. During that time Psalm 131 really helped. It says, “O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvellous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.”
‘I had been a pastor at a church in London for 12 years, but we felt that God was calling us to move to another place without knowing why.
‘It was quite terrifying, or at least, it should have been, but it wasn’t. We got to a point where we felt that disobeying God would have been scarier.
‘I chose to find peace in the process, and the peace was really precious. I’m quite a rational person and it was really helpful to have a particular prayer to pray that has forced me to engage in an emotional way.
‘I had sleepless nights before we made the decision, but once we had made it, something changed in my heart and from that point on, I haven’t had a sleepless night. I’m surprised by that.
‘God has provided every step of the way. I have a great new job, my wife does too, we’re at a wonderful church and there’s a good school for my daughter. I hope this experience of trust will be something that we can take comfort in and see how God has provided for us. I hope that for my daughter, who’s only six, having had a positive experience of trusting God at an early age will set her on a good path for the future.’
