Parachutes for Pets gets record number of calls; needs donations, volunteers

CALGARY –  A local charity is putting the call out for donations and volunteers as economic uncertainty has prompted a record number of inquiries at Parachutes for Pets.

The organization offers subsidized pet care for Calgarians struggling to make ends meet.

“Our mantra is keeping the family pet with the family,” said the charity’s Melissa David. “We are a first-of-its-kind [group].”

David says ever since Huksy announced layoffs and potential changes to the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program were brought up, more and more people have been calling into the charity, nervous that they might soon need the support.

“We’ve had a lot of people calling, not necessarily needing help right now, but really concerned about the future and [curious about] what will be available to them. [They’re] panicked about keeping their pets.”

David said cuts in the provincial budget also have people concerned that their jobs are on the line.

The group is hosting a Christmas clinic–a free vaccine holiday party for low-income people with pets–next month.

“We’ve got vets that are volunteering and going to be doing physical exams, vaccines. Every pet is going to get a stocking. Every owner is getting a stocking with the essentials. We’re going to have Christmas cookies and treats and pet photos with Santa,” said David.

Parachutes for Pets is also looking for donations and volunteers. There are two drop-off locations for donations–if you don’t know what to donate, there’s a wish list on the site.

“There’s really nothing for Calgarians and their pets right now. None of the shelters accept pets so our event will really be the only time they can have a true celebration with their pet,” said David. “So, we’re really hoping everyone can come together and make this a success.”
