First-ever playground planned for downtown Cleveland

North Coast Harbor plans to break ground on the first-ever downtown Cleveland playground on Oct. 28.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- North Coast Harbor will be home to the first playground in downtown Cleveland.

The Downtown Cleveland Alliance is staying mum until the free family groundbreaking, at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 28. But the playground will be built north of the Great Lakes Science Center, on the grass near the William G. Mather steamship.

North Coast Harbor, which is home to the Goodtime III and a transient marina, hosts kickball, bocce ball, running groups and yoga all summer long. And it’s seen plenty of development in the last few years.

The Luxury Harbor Verandas apartments opened last year on the East Ninth Street Pier, and retail spaces are still to come.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year on a $17 million pedestrian bridge across the harbor, from the science center to Voinovich Park, near Nuevo Modern Mex restaurant. The drawbridge is expected to be completed by June 2022.

And the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is planning to expand its landmark building on the acre of city-owned grass that separates it from the science center.
