A new bill has been introduced which would require almost all trucks in the U.S. to set their speed limiters to 65mph.
Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson and Delaware Senator Chris Coons have introduced “The Cullum Owings Large Truck Safe Operating Speed Act of 2019.” Named in honor of Road Safe America president and co-founder Steve Owings’s late son, the bill would require all new trucks to be manufactured with a built-in speed limiter set to 65mph. In addition, all trucks that currently have speed limiting abilities must have set their limiters to 65mph.
“The majority of trucks on our roads already have speed-limiting technology built in, and the rest of the technologically advanced world has already put them to use to ensure drivers follow safe speeds,” Senator Isakson said. “This legislation would officially enforce a long-awaited speed limit of 65 mph on large trucks and reduce the number of preventable fatalities on our busy roadways.”
While the legislation has the support of several safety groups, opponents of speed limiter regulation point out that there are actually safety concerns to be considered. When large trucks are limited to a lower speed than the traffic around them, studies show that accident risk actually increases.

I can’t imagine anything safer than having all the other traffic on the road flow around you like the river flowing around a rock.
Steel Horse and Wooden Mem says
The problem is you still have cars flowing like NASCAR drivers around you till they hit someone.
It is 65, but cars still hit trucks doing 65. Problem is type of drivers being hired. If a driver has history, don’t train and give a CDL to.
Don says
New hires were my very first thought as well. Not that I’m perfect, but I have only one speeding ticket in 17 years of Professional Freight Re-Location, and 0 road accidents. Now, my parking mishaps are a different story that speed had nothing to do with.
Tom says
Sure it did. It took you so long to get there, you were worn out by the time you got there. Couple that with the boredom of a slow truck and I can see the cause of your parking woes.
John Garrison says
So it’s the truck drivers fault that they can’t go any faster than 65 because that’s what the truck is set at and he’s making everyone in passenger vehicles drive like idiots?? Please do tell.

I agrer, remember trucks driving 55 and cars doing 65? Didn’t work so good then.
Jeff says
No and it never will these pinhead snowflakes in Congress and FMCSA and other snowflake organizations don’t realize that they’ve already got egg on their face saying that it was safer with the elogs when we told them it wouldn’t be they won’t listen they found out for themselves after their studies we were right they were wrong again

Jeff says
That’s what it is now 75 has been for years and there’s no problem with it if it ain’t broke don’t fix it leave it alone

You said it all in your name…duh! Glad you have such high regard for truckers. You should quit watching cnn for your trucking news.
Kathleen says
I totally agree and couldn’t have said it better myself!!!!! The split speed limits are accidents waiting to happen.
Scott Hutson says
Agreed
SJ says
So….. why not cars also? They’re the real problem anyway. Also, the technology exists to limit a vehicle to the speed limit of the road it’s on.
Jeff says
SJ, I agree with you 100%, some of these four wheelers don’t have a clue what they’re doing out on the road. No one from the FMCSA has ever held a CDL. What gives him the right to make laws for us. I wouldn’t try to pull teeth if I if I wasn’t a qualified dentist
Erik Kloeppel says
FMCSA does rules, mostly concerning safety. This proposal is a law- something FMCSA can’t do ( though the difference is difficult to distinguish ). In either event, it IS asinine.

They are stupid. We need to take control by weeding out the bad truck drivers making us look bad, by reporting them to their companies when we see and prove bad behavior

I’ve done that. Didn’t work
Rawdog says
I don’t like the bad apples any more than you, but one thing I like even less is a whiney little snitch ! If you have a problem with the way someone is acting or driving or whatever you should say something to them not call their boss and cry about it … and I don’t mean driving by them blowing the horn and giving them the finger , I mean try to talk to them on the radio or follow them (if your going the same way) to the next truck stop and buy him a cup of coffee and offer some advice, that’s the problem with this industry anymore, everyone is so worried about themselves and think they are high and mighty that they never think about what may be going in with that driver that they call and complain about. I’m not saying there aren’t instances where that wouldn’t do any good or the driver is so unsafe that he really does need to be taken off the road but mostly those guys just need some good advice and someone to learn how to do it right from… so instead of being a rat and just trying to get someone fired (they will just go get in another truck with the same bad habits) try being a helpful person and maybe you end up making a friend. End of rant

Next time that ever happens, they told me DO NOT STOP, keep going! Till I get to a Truck Stop! I said: Deal, we’ll do! It’s never happened since! Hope it never happens again! But IF the guy was just “Being Stupid”, He filled his pants I’m sure AND WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN, I bet! “Maybe” he learned!

I wish if they had to mandate something it would be quality dash cam in every truck. ( not driver facing)That would financially break these ashat lawyers that blame truckers for every thing including bad weather. Put a dash cam in your personal vehicle too. I have one in every vehicle I own and it has paid for it’self many times over.I also have rear facing camera too for the idiot that tailgates.Cheap in comparison to how much it could end up costing in a court case. James Whitehill says
My personal belief is that why we have all of the controls and regulations we have now. I was very young at the time, only single digits, but I seem to recall images of parked trucks on interstates all over the country as truckers protested high fuel prices/taxes. I haven’t done the research but I thought the government stepped in and caved to some degree. I believe they don’t want to be in that position again so the regs are their way of keeping the trucking community from getting too big to control. I may be a little off in what I remember but at that age it wasn’t something that really held my interest. Just my 2 cents worth.
Erik Kloeppel says
Not gonna happen. That’s the primary purpose of the ATA- prevent a serious trucker strike. Sure, they only have a percentage of the trucks on the road, but it’s seen as enough to break any possible strike- there’s enough small companies who’d jump at the loads any striker would lose.
gail morra says
They tried a strike this past spring. No results came from it.
Dave says
Walter, it doesn’t even take all truckers to go on strike, just the fuel haulers. In 3-4 days, all gas stations would be out of gas, all truck stops would be out of diesel, airports would be shut down because there wouldn’t be any av-gas for the jets. Fuel haulers alone could bring this country to a standstill in less than a week.
Fozzy says
Do you haul fuel?
Jeff says
2-3 days
Punnisher says
Major airports are connected to underground fuel lines . Airports like Kennedy , Atlanta , O’Hare , Los Angeles , Dallas Fort Worth etc. could never maintain their thirst for fuel through tanker trucks but point well taken !

This idea was proven deadly a few years back when a semi was doing as fast as it was set for, which was under the posted speed limit, when a car going over a hill couldn’t see the truck and crashed into the back of it. These clowns that know nothing about truck driving especially senators, need to worry about other things and leave the driving to the pros.
Fozzy says
So these accidents are the trucks fault? LOL.. make up my mind! At some point, trucks go slower that traffic… I forget that drivers don’t understand many simple things
Mark Warrick says
This is just a couple of pin heads that are owned by the “trucking alliance “you know who they are, just another ploy to put everyone on their level to even their playing. The beat solution to idiots like this is to stay off the interstate and back up traffic all throughout the towns and cities and let the public worry about it. If you do decide to run as normal, when you get into an accident and the media and law unenforcement wish to pin it on you then turn the table on them and sue the hell out of the local pd and state because of their unwillingness to protect you like the other citizens. You have rights to be safe on the roads and at your workplace even though they are one in the same. Be safe and let the chips fall where they may.

“Like water around a rock…”
Have you ever seen a dry rock at the bottom of a river?
No.
That’s because the water isn’t flowing around it. It is being constantly IMPACTED by the higher velocity water with such force that the hard edges of the rock are gradually ground down, turning rough stone into smooth river rock.

It’s not the trucks! Did the hours of service change save lives? No, it caused tired truckers and more accidents. Did E-logs save any lives? No, they did not, it just cost us money and upped glider sales.

I guess I am missing something here. A car that cuts a truck off and causes an accident at 65 mph is just as dead as cutting the truck off at 75 mph. I’ve been driving 35 years and have never understood this mentality. Despite their alleged safety ratings (remember “lies, damn lies and statistics”), the plastic and beer can on wheels they produce nowadays don’t stand up to car vs car, much less anything bigger.
Craig says
Rather be in a 65 mph accident than 75….
mousekiller says
Most of the accidents are going to be from being rear ended by the four wheeler not the truck hitting the four wheeler. They will find you the truck driver at fault no matter. A truck was hit. The truck and or the driver had to be in violation of something.
Fozzy says
Got any statistics on that? Or just talking as a perpetual victim?
Jeff says
Austin I agree but now trucks are mainly plastic so you see them scattered all over the highway not like it used to be when you hit a truck you knew it now it flies a part just like a plastic car
Barb says
More b.s. from the geeks in Washington. It is a proven static that four wheelers cause over 80 per cent of accidents involving semi trucks. Instead of enforcing speed limits on cars driving fast, the solution is punish the truck driver. One more year of driving, and I am out. Would not recommend driving to any one.
mousekiller says
I quit recommending truck driving years ago. they are putting far too many behind the wheel that are not mentally mature enough I don’t care the age.18 or 25. Still kids mentally.
Been driving a cmv for over 50 years. Seen a lot done a lot. I used to love truck driving. Now its not fun nor safe and the worst is drivers will not stick together for any reason. The lack any kind of credentials to be a truck driver. That is how the Govt The FMCSA see us. REVENUE enhancement tools. There is a truck, lets pull him over and find something wrong .
Jeff says
Barb I agree plus I’ve seen this stat and Rich during his four wheeler do cause 80 to 90% of all accidents with a tractor trailer but we get blamed and more restrictions throat on us I’ll still say they need to restrict all senators cars at 65 and see how that goes Along with other cars restrict them and see what happens

More “feel good “ legislation from idiots who have no clue.
1) it’s been demonstrated that split speed limits are more dangerous than single- simply because the disparity between the slower moving vehicles and the speeders is greater, if no other reason.
2) it’s come to light, recently, that some 75% of all wrecks involving trucks were actually caused by some idiot in a crunchy.
3) when the government mandated a national 55mph speed limit back in the 70s, yeah, fatalities decreased. But the number of wrecks over all climbed.
Maybe they should spend more money on enforcing existing laws, making the highways safer that way.
Jeff says
Erik That’s right they did have a federal 55 mph speed limit in the 70s but cars and trucks ran 55 mph not just trucks
Alex Quiroga says
Trust me there will be more collisions.
Kenny says
If all trucks are mandated to run at one constant speed I won’t run OTR. I can see the congestion arise with two trucks locked side by side for miles down the road and motorists stuck behind these trucks. I know of no other industry with so many regularions and rules except for the military and the military wasn’t nearly as bad as this industry. I’ll go local if that goes into effect.
Jeff says
Kenny I’m with you there I’ll seriously think about going local if I can find one that pays good
Ken Sawyer says
I set mine at 65 a long time ago but i did so because I was going in and out of Canada weekly and it’s the law up there. I am now in a dedicated route and left it at the 65 because at 70 my series 60 fuel gauge outruns my speedometer. But it was my choice in neither case was I forced to do it. I could have said no to the loads going to Canada I chose to take them. For someone running otr 65 mph is a pay cut.
Alex c says
U da man
Craig says
How do you figure a pay cut???
Love to see your math on that..
Andrew H says
Here’s an idea. On 3 or more lane highways or through congested areas, don’t bar trucks from the leftmost lanes, instead, have thru trucks stay towards the left, or at least out of the far right lane. I see more incidents with people merging around trucks than anything else.
mousekiller says
Most of the licensed drivers today of ALL vehicles do not know how to merge. That is the problem.
Tim says
That would be great… my truck is already set at 65mph anyways so…. now we just need a new bill to make all these states bump their speed limit for trucks to 65mph. You can’t have one without making it fair on the other!! Either do both or don’t do it at all.
Robby says
I only got one dollar so you should only have one dollar I can only go 65 so you should only go 65 sounds like a demacrap and your part of the problem
mousekiller says
TIM.Did not make any sense . the bill is to make it a fed speed limit of 65 for trucks. Not state speed limit. Back in the 70s they used the excuse and lie about saving fuel due to a fuel shortage.Did not last long.
Douglas Kirk says
They think they have problems now….
A majority of trucks on the road can’t even do 70 as it is.
I propose a top speed of 10 mph for EVERY vehicle on wheels in the U.S.
That is the only way the magical zero fatalities will ever be attained.
Sounds like it’s time to park em, kiddies….the message might get thru
John brueckman says
You want a real truck driver shortage go ahead and limit the speed to 65 you’ll get your driver shortage.looks like those senaters are getting paid off like the public don’t know what’s going on.

And all legislators , that can’t walk straight…not to mention thinking( most of them and 90% of four wheelers can’t hold straight line when they drive)… ; trying to impose another ‘safety’ related law on us. I can stop working tomorrow…and I will resist until I can. What I want to say is that safety has Absolutely nothing to do with speed. Speed doesn’t kill, guns don’t kill. Somebody making wrong decisions – people lucking common sense…. welcome to the future. Sealy new world without principals, no self-discipline, no self respect, no skills…I wonder what future will bring.

If hundreds of drivers and families made just one call these half wits in congress and the FMCSA would begin to listen when law suit by hundreds is mentioned and threatened . Over load the switchboard, inundate them with letters and Emails and phone calls. When you do be professional about it . This is the beginning of separating the dumpster divers and steering wheel holders from professionals. Evidently the fmcsa can’t tell the difference. Let’s show them who we really are.
Kurt says
They’re making me a believer I might need to do something else in the future I can’t see driving around in a pack that frustration is too much for me
Zukeepr says
All of you are so blind. Look at the big picture here. Automated trucks, drone delivery, robot delivery, more rail freight, 18 year old drivers….. get the picture now. It would please the government no more than to have total control and I mean total control. That way they can dictate what area of the country gets what and how much product. Ever heard of one world market and one world government? It’s not about safety, it’s about control. He who has the most toys wins.
mousekiller says
I’v been saying that since the 70s. Dumb down the truck driver, they are easier to control that way.. Now it is upon us like a hoard of locusts. Truth is, We the drivers have stood by and did nothing and allowed this to happen.
Mega carriers are afraid of the thinking driver. These drivers will soon learn what is going on and that is not a pretty picture the mega carriers want them to see. .
Younus Chowhan says
The best answer for ( 65 speed ) is new trucks driverless no human no mistake. You can bring down the speed to 55 for better safety and no ELD required as well. These truck can run day and night will generate more money to companies. It’s time to operate them than practicing. Why they don’t accept ELD causing all the problems. ELD bring biggest problem call reserved pay parking truck stop are able to make more money by selling parking space I am sure at the time of getting (truck stop location)approval from government they showed on paper free parking for truckers. Each day we have very serious problems finding a place for parking. Has government done anything about it?
mousekiller says
Don’t confuse nor blame the ELD with a driver making a bad decision. The ELD does not make any decisions. it is the driver that drives tired or speeds or cant read the sign NO turn or NO trucks or ROAD ENDS. the drivers that cannot make a safe sound decision is at fault not the ELD .The ELD is a record keeper of your driving. It is a clock to keep you aware of your hours you have worked and can work. ELD is the electronic logging device. Just like when we did paper logs. Same goal .Not a lot of difference except it takes out the requirement for a driver to figure out how to read an atlas and put pen to paper .. Don’t blame the ELD. Technology is good up to a point then it begins to be an issue to overcome.
Younus Chowhan says
I have a question about new truck without driver.
If any car coming so fast towards the new driverless truck will truck speed up and run away to avoid accident or they set a missile for defense
mousekiller says
It is possible they have cameras and radar that record and sense objects around them. It will know if there is going to be an impact and it is going to be recorded. Fault is going to finally be placed where is should be .The unsafe driver.

Big business who pays their drivers lower wages limit speed to 65 to save money on fuel. So wasteful to make someone drive 65 on a wide open road with 75 or 80 mph speed limit. This is probably just big business trying to unfairly extinguish thier competition.
TRUCKERS LET’S FIND THE GOVERNMENT COMMENT SECTION AND VOICE OURSELVES THEIR. USUALLY THE GOVERNMENT POSTS A WEBSITE THAT ALLOWS FOR COMMENTS
Old Hand says
Lest we forget that the speed differential is even greater in western states where the speed limit is 75 and 80 MPH for all vehicles, but these two East coast knuckleheads wouldn’t know that, read any statistics or perform any studies of their own.
Say like, Climb up in a truck for a Day and witness for themselves what it’s really like on the road for us and witness who the real problem drivers are.
No, let’s just add more rules and regulations because they have a proven history of working so well.
I can’t wait until there is a Real driver shortage, oh but wait, yeah they’re working on Autonomous (driverless) trucks with great progress already.
So when there’s no human truck drivers left and people are still getting killed by trucks, Perhaps we should just send all the trucks to the scrap yard too, eh Senators?
All Hail the STATE.
Corey Jackson says
We all know who lining the pockets of these two senators. The mega carriers of course! They see the elogs didn’t force the owner ops and small fleets into bankruptcy so they desperately need another sinister plot and this is it. We’ll see how this plays out.
Luke Warm says
You know this bill was already written before these two morons ever saw it.
William H Srygler says
I guess that 65 mph is going to be safe and put a end of the truck wrecks just like the electronic logs did LMAO paper pusher’s sitting behind a desk don’t have a clue.!
Renee says
Maybe we should have another convoy, if they don’t get there stuff, then they will they might wake up!? MAYBE!
Lawrence Fessler says
speed regulators if they set trucks at 65 than set the cars at 65 too No discrimination
Tom watson says
I say 60 should be the goal. At sixty all the high rollers will either quit or drive the same speed i do everyday
Robby says
Why not make it 40mph
Luke Warm says
Why don’t we just put all the stuff on a horse and carriage and take it from town to town.
Problem solved!
IZ says
Tom, It sounds like you drive for Swift.
Nathan says
Combine this measure with mandatory hourly pay with overtime and you have a deal!
Gabe says
That’s not going to happen
Luke Warm says
For all time in the truck, sleeper birth and everything.
Jon says
Quit waisting tax payer money on this it will never happen I personally will park my truck. More than likely the idiot backing this bill will be the result of destroying the American economy.
Jon says
The FMCSA and Congress wouldn’t know safety it it jumped up with a big rubber sex toy and slapped them in the face with it.
Short circuit says
Well if your gonna do go ahead and do it. That will be THE LAST STRAW for me I’m ready to be done anyway so that will do it for me. Isn’t much left out there but wanna be drivers unsafe and discourteous
Robby says
I like gummy bears
Bob says
STOP TRYING TO BLAME 18 WHEELER TRUCKS AND MANAGE PEOPLE IN CARS, CAUSE THEY CAUSE THE MOST ACCIDENTS AND POLLUTION!!!
Grim Reaper says
Man!!… I LOVE RETIREMENT
You will never ( THATS NEVER) shut this country down, too many drivers are worried about their jobs & families.
What you all can do is drive 55 and really jam up todays roads. Continue to work, just do it a lil “LOW & SLOW BABY”
mousekiller says
Most states have a minimum of 50 mph on major roads like turnpikes and interstates. Do 55 mph every day for a week. Then watch the news stations. It will be noticed and you will be legal doing it. Simple, easy, and legal.
Trucker Mike says
65 is the limit for trucks in IN & MI, where I do most of my driving…its a pain, but, it’s been that way for a LONG time, in fact, MI just UPPED it to 65 from 60 for trucks. Of course, that doesn’t stop trucks from doing 70. A governed truck will.
Splitting the limit frustrates the crap out of 4 wheelers. Get trucks side by side doing 65 for an hour, see how many people write their congressmen & senators begging for the law to be changed.
Luke Warm says
So what’s the traffic fatality stats? Are they any lower in Indiana or Michigan? Cuz this seems like the perfect formula for increased road rage.
Rick says
IF THE TRUCKERS THST STARTED IN THE LAST 15 YEARS WERENT SO MESSED UP AND LOST WE WOULDNT BE DEALING WITH THIS
SO I DONT GO TO FAR ANYMORE AND I LOVE IT!!!!! All of these CLOWNS want to where flip flops and have their little gay relationships instead of worrying about the job and learn how to park THIS wouldn’t happen. SO YOU CLOENS RUINED IT FOR THE GUYS THAT DONT ACKNOWELEDGE YOU ON THE ROAD AND YOU CAN DEAL WITH ALL OF THE CHILDISH RULES. ITS ALL OF THESE 15 YEAR AND LESS DRIVERS THAT ARE WITH THESE 62 MPH COMPANIES ANYWAYS SO THEY WILL GET AN INCREASE AND CAUSE MORE ACCIDENTS. WHEN YOU GO TO A TRUCK STOP ANYMORE AND LOOK AROUND ITS LIKE A WAITING ROOM AT A MENTAL HOSPITAL. THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO BUSINESS DRIVING A TRUCK.
mousekiller says
Your so right Rick. Hard to tell the truck driver in the truck stop from the dumpster divers and the homeless. They smell, look and talk the same.
Luke Warm says
You’re blaming the symptom not the problem.
charli says
Man I pray I’m gone by then
Gary says
There are 2 kinds of people in this world. Ones that don’t know, and ones that don’t know they don’t know. These people make these without a clue to the possible consequences. That makes them guilty of stupidity. But they’ve been told over and over about the consequences and they still chase this??? That makes them guilty of negligence. Now, how is hos and the eld mandate working for them? The same consequences we kept telling would happen, is happening. They wouldn’t be revisiting those laws if they were working.
Glenn Davis says
Gee, accident rates actually increased? Can’t imagine why. Maybe running a basically freight train of trucks down the right lane of freeways leads to lack of proper traffic space?
Walter Latham says
I have to agree with several commenters. If you’re going to limit trucks to 65, you need to limit ALL vehicles to 65! I remember several years ago in Louisiana, a sting operation was done on the Atchafalaya bridge. Over 300 4 wheelers were ticked for speeding. What did the geniuses do? Of course, restrict trucks to the right lane only at max speed of 55! Same manner of thinking, find the culprits and punish the others.
Ray says
Most of the accidents I’ve seen out on the road is just cars. Can’t see how slowing trucks down is going to lower car crashes. This all started with the “slow down move over” when cops are on the side of the road thing. If they’re so worried about there personal safety then they shouldn’t be in law enforcement! I was moving over long before any one ever heard of that law. I started doing it because I’d seen truckers doing it when I was a kid. A good driver knows the right thing to do! I’m mainly on the east coast so most the roads I’m on are 55 and 65.
Paul Bierlein says
They should speed limit the four wheelers that would decrease the accidents considerably
Jim Gilley says
Its really a shame that those pencil pushers will never know the real truth…when will they ever learn …what is on paper doesn’t always match to what is real…I bet that if they did our job for at least one year they would quickly change their minds about what they are proposing…..
Claude Marc says
As a drvr we all know that a truck can’t be stopped for several hundred feet at speeds over 55 mph.I personally think 65 shud be the limit. Other vehicles shud be the same speed. The most dangerous vehicle on the road today is anyone texting…and 99% are texting…cars and truck drivers…congress has to implement a law requiring all vehicles to hav the device installled that will not let you use a mobile device of any kind while the vehicle is moving. You must be stopped or it want work. Att and other telecommunications companies has congress in their back pocket and fight this inexpensive device that wud make our hwys 100,000% safer overnite..Our trucks have this already in our email and messaging tablets we use to communcate with our companies. Call your representative today. If you cud see what I see everyday …you wudnt get on the hwys. Its unreal..
Anthony h Funari says
As a driver for twenty years I know the safest place to be for a truck is going with the flow of traffic. It is ridiculous for trucks to impede traffic. Just like driving in the right lane during rush hour traffic. People are like little kids give them an inch they will take a mile. If anything else lower the speed limit back to 55 so people won’t drive over 70.
Beth McKinnon says
I learned more about safety by finally being able to go 75. I learned to plan moves way ahead of time, signal earlier, leave more space. All things I’d been told, but hit me better when I was able to go a different speed than other trucks. When I’m in California, cars just get pissed off because I’m so slow. They think we’re busting their chops. They also seem to think it’s okay to cut me off more. If all trucks are limited to the exact same speed, the traffic jams will be legendary. You will end up with 6000 trucks stuck in the same lane with no ability to to change speed (other than down) to avoid situations. Sometimes, being able to speed up can get you out of a situation when nothing else will. Also, I expect we will see more cars acting out road rage because they’re annoyed by our speed. Stupid idea. Doesn’t increase safety
Thunder road says
If this was researched, I’m sure you would find a lobbyist that is pushing this to gain strength for self driving trucks. As some of us know, lower the speed, you increase the time on the road. Increase the time one the road(day cab for an example), increase fatigue or driving time.
My employer set my speed limiter to 65mph because of insurance purposes…even though I proved(a certain route) by increasing my speed 5mph would increase one load a day…you do the math!
Chaz says
There are people that make policies an laws that not only they have no idea of but don’t themselves follow or feel will apply to them.they do this so they say they’ve accomplished something.trucks get brake checked by cars because they’re pissed off that we are in their way an going to slow.wonder how bad the collisions will happen after this law.cant fix stupid.
Weldman says
Everyone complaining of being like a rock in a river flow yet out here in Montana truck speed limit is 65 mph and 4 wheel speed is 80 and there isn’t a problem here of such. If anything people should worry about is doing max of 65 mph and tire blows out on front and no way to accelerate the truck faster to gain control by lifting the front up instead crash and burn.
me says
Wright your senators!!! Wright Mitch McConnell asking him to not allow this bill to make the floor for a vote. It’s just another government overreach!
Grim Reaper says
Write not wright u steering wheel holder
Kim says
Insurance rates are the speed limiters of a free market economy. Senators Isakson and Coons, representing Georgia and Deleware respectively would better serve their constituents by opposing the Bill that would allow Truck Driving Schools to self certify their own graduates.
D says
why are you guys going to have enough of this BS when are you going to shut down what’s it going to take for you guys to get your attention
TheRealTrucker says
Hope this goes into effect because I’m gonna ride the hammer lane whenever possible. We can cause traffic jams across America! Imagine with all the differences in weight between trucks and the grade in certain states, this will wreak havoc! Will be awesome! All because some rich douchebag’s son gets killed, nice! In yo face!
Cherokee says
State’s are raising speed limits up to 75 and 80 mph and those idiots in DC still think putting our trucks at 65 is safe. Then they can drive them.
Ken b says
anytime the government says safety for big trucks it really means bend over and take another one
Luke Warm says
You know what be more effective at preventing fatal accidents, not rubber stamping kids into a driver’s license and instead teaching them how to drive around big trucks.
Luke Warm says
You know they could put an end to almost all accidents I just enforcing the safe following distance laws.
Johnbob57 says
It’s about time… gee wiz, do we really think autonomous will go any faster? Our cowboy days are numbered. Less fuel burned, less accidents, less lives unraveled, higher rates!!! Stop thinking we drive Miata’s. We drive 80k pound killing machines! And NO, we are no better drivers than any other vehicle/driver on THE ROAD.
Wendall says
How about setting the speed limiter on cars and pickups? That alone would lower speed related fatalities.
Kevin says
Look at the facts. In 2017 there were 37133 people killed in auto accidents. Out of those 4761 involved big trucks. Out of those 81 % were the car was at fault. So if I did the math right trucks killed 904 people. So instead of penalizing trucks let’s try educating people about trucks and the space we need
Alan says
Agreed 100%
RC says
All I see is trucks side by side doing 65 mph
Mike says
AAA came out with the automotive fatality stats for Michigan a few weeks ago. Car fatalities are down when compared to 2017. Commercial vehicle fatalities were up, 18% in 2018 vs 2017. What happened in 2018 to have such a significant jump in fatalities involving commercial vehicles? Anyone?
Alan says
To many untrained drivers.
